Pallet Chicken Coop Phase 1
Things are really starting to take shape around here you guys! Im so excited to share phase one of building our chicken coop. Once its done this place will feel way more legitimate as a homestead.
I know I said I wanted to get the garden planted asap, but the ground was still too wet to till and the local extension office says the last freeze will be around March 10th.... So instead of planting a garden, we hit the next thing on the homestead to-do list...building a chicken coop!
So we set out to find free pallets. There is a construction business near our home and we always see stacks of pallets there, so it was the obvious first place to look. My husband walked in and asked the man if we could take some pallets and he asked how many we wanted and told him to come back in a couple of hours and hed have them ready for us! Thanks to our neighbor with a trailer, by lunch we had 18 pallets in our yard!
Once we had the pallets and knew what size they were - they were all the same size, yay! - we came up with a basic plan and set to work. Im so grateful for a husband with a lot of construction background, because this thing would never have come together without him.
First we grabbed some concrete blocks and put them into the ground for a foundation, this possibly took the longest of any step in the construction because we had to make them as level as possible.
Then put a pallet on top for a base (and we found a piece of plywood in the shed that turns out to be almost exactly the right size for the floor! but I didnt get a picture of it...)
After that was screwed into the blocks, we started going vertical and added pallet walls. We used two pallets for each wall, so its a tall coop.
Then we made a hole for the door and attached the rafters.
And there you have it! Phase one! We are really happy with the coop so far. And even happier with how much it has cost us to build. So far weve only had to purchase a few 2x4s and some hardware for the door. Everything else we got for free or was already in the shed when we bought the house, right down to the screws, a saw, and gallons of paint! Our neighbor has even offered us some left over shingles and plywood for the roof!
